Some of the differences between mice and voles can be noted by observing their tails, eyes, nose and ears. These two creatures often get people mixed up but on close examination the two can be distinguished.
Mice have gray to brown fur while voles have brown, short fur that is usually smooth when touched. Mice have long scaly tails that may reach a length of 3 inches, while voles have a short tail of about 1 3/8 inches long. Another difference is that mice have small eyes while voles have small beady eyes. A person can easily notice the ears of mice since they are naked and prominent but may have a hard time noticing a vole's ears since they are concealed under thick fur.
