What are some different kinds of penguins?

Magellanic, king, Adélie and southern rockhopper are some types of penguins. The flightless birds are well-adapted to life in the water, where they spend about half of their lives.

Penguins range in size from the 3-foot-tall emperor penguin to the diminutive fairy penguin. The primary diet of wild penguins is krill, squid and fish.

Almost all penguins are native to the southern hemisphere. Most wild penguins are found on and around the continent of Antarctica, although some penguins live in the tropical Galapagos Islands.

Of the 18 penguin species alive in 2015, only five are not threatened or endangered, according to the conservation group, BirdWatch International.
