Some different types of ceiling textures are popcorn, mud swirl and slapbrush. The popcorn-type ceiling is a bit messy to apply and must be applied with a machine. Effects such as glitter can be added to enhance the ceiling's attractiveness.

Two people are needed to apply a mud swirl texture to a ceiling. The ceiling needs to be sanded first. The first person applies the mud, while the helper follows behind with a swirling brush.

A slapbrush, or stippled ceiling, also uses mud. This time the mud is first thinned out and applied in rolls with a roller, and more mud is slapped on using a special brush.
