Mental health screening tools include the Patient Health Questionnaire, or PHQ-9; the STABLE Resource Toolkit; and the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale, or C-SSRS, for depression, bipolar disorder and suicide risk, respectively, states the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Screenings occur in primary care and other health care settings.

Mental health screening tools offer doctors a chance to assess symptoms and identify and manage mental health disorders in patients, explains SAMHA. SAMHA recommends regular screening for people of all ages as early detection leads to early care and a greater chance of success in dealing with mental health disorders.
