It is impossible to know who discovered Jupiter. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, was known to exist before recorded history. The naked eye can see Jupiter on a clear night sky without aid.

Jupiter was named after the most powerful god in Roman mythology. Universe Today explains that early astronomers tracked planet movements. Astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who lived from 1473 to 1543, created a model for the solar system where the sun was its center and not the Earth. In 1610, Galileo Galilei was the first person to record details of his observations of Jupiter and its four moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
