Platinum was first discovered by the pre-Colombian natives of South America. However, in 1735, Antonio de Ulloa was given credit for the discovery of platinum.
The pre-Colombian Indians of South America first produced artifacts made from a white gold platinum alloy. The first written account of platinum, by Julius C. Scaliger in 1557, describes a strange metal found in the mines between Panama and Mexico that could not be melted by fire or any of the Spanish arts. Various samples of platinum were also found in Jamaica by the British metallurgist Charles Wood in 1741. In 1746, after returning to Spain from the French Geodesic Mission, Antonio de Ulloa was also credited with the discovery of platinum.
