When does divergent evolution occur?
By Forinfos - 13/02/2026 - 0 comments
Divergent evolution happens with the formulation of a new species from a larger population, explains JRank. Evolutionary adaptations necessary for survival cause a subset within a population to adapt differently to the point that a new species emerges.
Divergent evolution occurs due to habitat changes, alterations in a primary food source, interbreeding or any change that dramatically alters the way in which a species survives. This occurs for any species, including different plants and animals. Both artificial selection and natural selection produce divergent species. One example of divergence includes the emergence of humans from its ape ancestors as a response to the need of bipedal stature.
