The Isthmus of Panama divides North America and South America. The narrow Isthmus of Panama contains the country of Panama and the Panama Canal. The isthmus separates the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Panama and the Pacific Ocean.
The narrowest points of the Isthmus of Panama are the Isthmus of Darien to the east and the Isthmus of Chiriqui to the west. Overall the Isthmus of Panama is approximately 400 miles long east to west. It extends from the border of Colombia to the border of Costa Rica. Several different types of terrain are on the Isthmus of Panama, including coastal plains, mountains and rain forests.
