Standard prognosis for metastatic melanoma is 15 to 20 percent and 10 to 15 percent for the five-year and the 10-year observed survival rates respectively, states the American Cancer Society. Factors affecting this outlook include the melanoma stage, age, genetic changes in the cancer cells and their response to treatment.
Metastatic or stage 4 melanoma is an aggressive type of skin cancer at a very advanced stage, explains the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Treatment options that prolong survival of the patient include chemotherapy with dacarbazine; clinical trials; interleukin-2, or IL-2; and a combination of biochemotherapy and chemotherapy.
