What documents do Canadians need to visit the United States?

In most cases, Canadians wishing to visit or study in the United States do not need a visa. However, Canadians entering the United States by air must provide their passports upon entry. If entering by land or sea, Canadians must show a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative-compliant document.

Examples of Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative-compliant documents that allow Canadians to enter the United States by land and sea are a valid passport, an enhanced driver's license or a trusted traveler program card, such as NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST. Also, if the Canadian entering the United States is under 16 years of age, a birth certificate is acceptable for entry. This rule also applies to Canadians under 19 years of age if they are traveling with a school or religious group.
