Docusate sodium is a drug used for treating constipation and preventing hard stools. This drug works by raising the amount of water the stool gets in the gut, thus making it softer.
People who are allergic to the ingredients of docusate are advised not to use the drug. A person who has appendicitis, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain should also avoid the drug, as stated by Drugs. Pregnant women, people using other medications and those who have a history of bowel obstruction should consult a doctor before using the drug. Docusate is taken by mouth with water as directed by a doctor. It can be used with or without food.
