What are the DOT physical blood pressure requirements?

A driver must have a blood pressure less than 140/90 in order to be medically certified to drive for a two-year period. This guideline comes from federal motor carrier safety regulations, but certain employers may impose a stricter standard.

A driver with higher blood pressure who has either stage 1 or stage 2 hypertension may be certified for a shorter amount of time while undergoing drug therapy to lower his blood pressure. A driver with blood pressure at or greater than 180/110 has stage 3 hypertension and cannot be certified, even temporarily, until blood pressure is reduced to 140/90 or less.
