WebMD notes that doxycycline hyclate is often prescribed to treat acne. It is a tetracycline antibiotic that acts to inhibit the growth of bacteria that lead to bacterial infections. Doxycycline hyclate is taken orally, preferably on an empty stomach, usually once or twice a day.
According to Mayo Clinic, moderate-to-severe acne is often treated with a combination of an oral antibiotic and a topical medication such as benzoyl peroxide. Acne is caused by hair follicles becoming plugged with oil and dead skin cells. The plugged follicle is an ideal environment for bacteria to grow. The resulting inflammation and infection creates pimples and cysts.
