Prior to his marriage to Robin Jameson, Dr. Phil McGraw was married to Debbie Higgins McCall. The couple married in 1970, when McGraw was 20, and the marriage was annulled in 1973.

Debbie Higgins McCall was an ex-cheerleader and former homecoming queen when she married McGraw, shortly after finishing high school. The marriage quickly fell apart. McCall claimed that Dr. Phil was domineering and barred her involvement in the family business. She also claimed to have been relegated to house chores and forced to do exercises that enhanced her breasts.

Before completing the process for annulling his first marriage, McGraw met Robin Jameson. The two were married in 1976.
