People with an implanted defibrillator should avoid driving for at least one week after the procedure, states the Mayo Clinic. Doctors may recommend longer-term restrictions for patients with a history of arrhythmia.

Patients without a history of life-threatening arrhythmia are usually able to drive within one week of receiving an implanted defibrillator if there are no other contraindications, writes the Mayo Clinic. However, those with a history of serious heart rhythm disturbances may be unable to drive until they are free from any shocks from their implants for six months, since the combination of arrhythmia and defibrillation can cause unconsciousness.
