What is a driving safety course?

A driving safety course teachers licensed drivers defensive driving skills. The course aims to teach students how to handle potential driving hazards in a safe manner.

Any driver can benefit from learning the driving skills taught in the course. Some participants take the driver safety course after getting a traffic ticket, as a way to reduce points on their licenses. Completing the class can also reduce insurance premiums.

States control the content of driver courses, but most cover common topics such as accidents, crash prevention, safety equipment, factors that inhibit driving skills and local traffic laws. Some states allow participants to take an online version of the driving course.
