What is in the DTaP vaccine?

The DTaP vaccine guards against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Doctors administer the vaccine as a single injection over five doses during childhood.

Infants receive the vaccine at age 2, 4, 6 and 15 to 18 months of age, with the final injection in the series administered at age 4 to 6, notes the CDC. Common side effects of DTaP vaccination include fever and swelling, redness, tenderness and soreness at the site of injection. Children may also be fussy or tired after administration of the injection or experience poor appetite or vomiting.
