The HPV vaccine protects against several strains of human papilloma virus, a virus that can cause genital warts and cervical cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Females between ages 11 and 26 and males between ages 11 and 21 are eligible for the vaccine.

Side effects of the HPV vaccine may include body aches, chills and fever, according to Mayo Clinic. Less common side effects include dry mouth, breathing difficulties and headache. While certain side effects tend to naturally subside as the body adapts to the vaccine, consult a physician if streaks or inflammation at the injection site, hindered mobility, or joint pain are present.
