According to WebMD, human papillomavirus is contagious. There are approximately 100 different kinds of HPV, with about 40 types being sexually transmitted and about 60 types producing warts on the hands or feet.
WebMD notes that sexually transmitted HPV types are spread by contact with mucous membranes, bodily fluids and infected genital skin. These HPV types may also be transmitted through intercourse. Serious health problems do not result from all 40 types of sexually transmitted HPV. Men and women of any age can be infected with HPV. There are often no symptoms experienced by people infected with HPV, and the body rids itself of the infection within a few years.
