What is the due process clause?

The due process clause states that "No American citizen shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without the due process of law." The due process clause is present in both the 5th and 14th amendments of the Bill of Rights.

Due process of law is a fair judicial treatment. The Bill of Rights is the name for the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The due process clause in the 5th amendment requires that Americans be given the choice of having a trial when accused of a crime. The 14th amendment was used to justify suffrage for African-Americans and women.
