Dugongs can live in the warm coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific region and the Red Sea . These habitats include East Africa, Australia and Vanuatu. However, most of the world's dugong population is found mainly in the waters of Australia from Shark Bay to Queensland.

Dugongs live primarily in shallow bays and lagoons that contain sea grass beds. Because this marine mammal's diet consists mainly of sea grass, they are also called sea cows.

Dugongs are large herbivorous animals that can weigh between 500 to 1,100 pounds and reach a maximum length of 10 feet. In the wild, they can live up to 70 years. Dugongs belong to the order 'Sirenia', and they are considered a threatened species.
