Is Dutch the same as Danish?

Dutch is not the same language as Danish. Dutch speakers live primarily in the Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname, while Danish speakers live primarily in Denmark, Greenland and the Southern Schleswig region of Germany.

Both Dutch and Danish are Germanic languages. However, Dutch comes from the West Germanic branch while Danish comes from the North Germanic, or Scandinavian branch. Both Dutch and Danish use the Latin script in their writing, though the Danish alphabet adds the diphthong "IJ" and the Dutch adds the letters "Æ," "Ø" and "Å." The two languages get much of their vocabulary from German, but around 60 percent of Danish vocabulary also comes from Old Norse.
