How do you dye leather?

To dye leather, first wet the leather with a damp sponge. In a circular motion, apply water or oil-based leather dye with a wool dauber. Once the leather has dried, you can apply an acrylic leather finish to seal in the dye.
- Wet the leather
Stroke the leather with a damp sponge to wet the surface of the leather, but do not saturate the leather with water.
- Dye the leather
To protect your hands from staining, put on rubber gloves. Using circular movements, apply the leather dye with a wool dauber or sponge. For a more even finish, spray on the dye with an airbrush. Move methodically from one side of the leather to the other. Continue applying the dye until you reach the desired intensity of color.
- Dry the leather
Let the leather air dry, or use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process.
- Finish the leather
Once dried, apply a clear acrylic leather finish to seal in the dye. Dip a damp sponge into the acrylic finish, and draw the sponge across the surface of the leather. Working in straight lines, make sure to stroke in the same direction. Please note that the acrylic finish may have a milky white appearance while wet, but it dries clear.
