Diverticulosis, a condition in which pouches form in the wall of the large intestine, usually does not cause symptoms in the early stages, according to WebMD. If symptoms occur, they are generally a result diverticulitis, an infection in one of the pouches, and may include fever, bloating and abdominal pain.
Diverticulosis is usually diagnosed after a patient undergoes a barium enema X-ray or colonoscopy for screening purposes or as a workup for another medical problem, according to WebMD. Prevention and treatment of diverticulosis is centered around avoiding constipation by consuming a diet high in fiber, getting regular exercise and drinking plenty of fluids. Avoiding straining during bowel movements is also beneficial.
