Early symptoms of swimmer's ear may include itching in the ear canal; clear, odorless drainage; and slight redness inside the ear, according to Mayo Clinic. Some people may experience discomfort when pulling on the outer ear when an ear infection caused by swimmer's ear is present.

The early symptoms of swimmer's ear are often mild and may go unnoticed, explains Mayo Clinic. If the infection progresses, people may experience increased pain, intense itching, pus discharge and muffled hearing.
