Mixtures of Borax, water, and sugar are one way of killing ants that are already inside the home, as the ants are likely to take the fatal mixture back to their colony. A mixture of liquid dish soap and hot water placed in a spray bottle also kills individual ants.

Other mixtures that act as deterrents and kills ant colonies over time include baking powder and sugar, which the ants eat. Pouring vinegar on the location of the ants' nest kills them, thereby preventing them from coming back to re-inhabit or rebuild their nest and discouraging them from entering the home.
