Ebola is a deadly illness caused by an infection from one of five virus strains, states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These virus strains infect both humans and primates, including monkeys, chimpanzees and gorillas. Ebola is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids.
Ebola was discovered near the Ebola River in 1976, notes the CDC. Outbreaks of this deadly disease sporadically appear in Africa. In 2014, the largest Ebola epidemic in history occurred, which involved several West African countries and several United States health care workers. Ebola causes fever, severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting, fatigue, diarrhea, unexplained bleeding or bruising, and stomach pain.
