What education does someone need to work in daycare?

While some states do not require daycare workers to have an education, others request a high school diploma and/or formal training. Individuals who want to work in higher level positions are normally required to have formal training.

Although many states require daycare workers to have at least a high school education, others may not for entry-level positions. As a rule, employers prefer their daycare workers to have finished high school. Individuals who want to seek senior positions should obtain a postsecondary qualification in early childhood education. People who want to participate in a Head Start program should study for a postsecondary degree in childhood education or a child development credential.

Most states require daycare workers to obtain a license. This means clearing a criminal background check, having at least the minimum training requirements and a full immunization record. In some states, staff must learn CPR and obtain a first aid certificate. Some states recognize the National Early Childhood Program Accreditation, which requires workers to have a high school diploma, complete work experience and pass an exam. The National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC) also offers a qualification that most states recognize. Once workers meet the basic educational requirements, they should expect to complete a training period with their chosen employer.
