What is academic probation?
By Forinfos - 25/05/2026 - 0 comments
"Academic probation" means that a college student is not performing at an acceptable level, and the student has a defined period of time to improve his grades. A 2.0 GPA is a common minimum standard. If a student fails to improve his grades, the probation can turn into a suspension.
When a college or university places a student on academic probation, a formal notification of the probationary status is sent to the student. The letter outlines steps necessary to improve academic standing for removal of probation. Meeting with an advisor to plan academic strategies is often required. Being on probation can prevent participation in school-sponsored sports and activities.
