Dewey Decimal System alternatives include Book Industry Standards and Communications, a keyword-based system the commercial book industry uses, and PIM for non-fiction materials, states the Public Library Association. Maricopa County, Arizona libraries now use Book Industry Standards and Communications, giving library patrons an experience similar to visiting a familiar bookstore.
More than 400 small-scale libraries in the Netherlands have adopted PIM, which uses a combination of keywords and color-coded pictograms. PIM is specifically designed for libraries with non-fiction collections of up to 15,000 items. As of 2015, PIM is only available in Dutch.
To accommodate its library customers, the Markham Public Library in Ontario, Canada created a completely new numerically based local system to substitute for the Dewey Decimal System.
