What is ejection fraction?

The ejection fraction is a measurement of how much blood is pumped from the left or right ventricle of the heart during each contraction. This test is used to determine if there is heart failure.

A normal ejection fraction is between 50 and 70, which means that a normal heart pumps out between 50 to 70 percent of the blood in the ventricle with each heartbeat. An ejection fraction under 40 percent can be an indication of heart failure. Low ejection fraction percentages can indicate a heart attack, problems with heart valves or a weakness of the heart muscle, according to the Mayo Clinic.
