Although he originally didn't even want to attend the Constitutional Convention, George Washington was elected president of it. The Convention met from the middle of May until the middle of September in 1787 to discuss ways of remedying the failing Articles of Confederation.
While some of the delegates wanted to do something to fix the Articles of Confederation, others wanted to go back to the drawing board and find a new plan for the government. One thing the delegates did agree on was that they wanted George Washington to preside over the meetings, electing him unanimously. The U.S. Constitution was written and signed by the end of these proceedings.
