What is an electric can opener?

An electric can opener is a small electrical kitchen appliance used for opening metal cans. Electric can openers sit on the counter top and open cans of assorted sizes. The first electric can opener was sold in December 1931, and the design has improved over time.

In 1870, William Lyman invented the manual can opener that most people use today. In 1925, The Star Can Company enhanced William Lyman’s design by adding a serrated rim to the wheel of the can opener.

Electric can openers are available in a variety of colors and brands at Amazon, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot and Walmart.
