What is an electrical box?

Electrical boxes are containers that keep wire connections organized and safe from tampering. They come in different types, shapes, sizes and materials that cater to both personal and commercial use.

Electrical boxes provide additional protection from accidental fires brought about by short circuits and poorly maintained electrical wiring.

There are five types of electrical boxes, namely handy boxes, junction boxes, new-work boxes, old-work boxes and outdoor boxes. The first four kinds differ in the purposes and limitations of installation.

Outdoor electrical boxes, on the other hand, are specifically made to be weatherproof to withstand harsh environments. Electrical boxes also come in metal or plastic, with metal being the preferred material for its durability.
