The element holmium contains 67 protons. In its elemental state with a neutral charge, an atom of holmium, which is represented by the chemical symbol Ho, contains an equal number of protons and electrons along with 98 neutrons when it's in its most stable form.

Holmium, which is often used to produce magnets, was discovered as an element in 1878. A proton is a particle of matter in an atom that contains a positive charge, as opposed to electrons, which carry a negative charge. Neutrons, the third type of particle, do not carry a charge and, therefore, are neutral. Holmium is part of a series of elements called lanthanides. It has an average atomic mass of 164.93 grams per mole.
