The elements found in rust are iron and oxygen. Rust has a chemical formula of Fe2O3.
Rusting is a chemical reaction, which refers to a reaction that occurs when one substance turns into something else. Iron starts out as a shiny metal, but if it comes into contact with damp air, it begins to rust. As iron, oxygen and water react, the iron turns from a shiny gray to a dull orange, which makes it easy to determine if rusting has occurred.
The final product of this reaction is ferric oxide, also called iron oxide, which has two atoms of iron for every three atoms of oxygen.
