Do elephants migrate?

Elephants migrate seasonally to search for food, water and mates. Some herds travel hundreds of miles when nearby waterholes are dry. Elephants usually travel between 6 and 12 miles per day.

The African elephant is the largest animal on Earth, standing approximately 13 feet at the shoulder and weighing up to 14,000 pounds. The Asian elephant is a slightly smaller relative identified by its comparatively shorter, rounder ears. The prehensile trunk of an elephant is a highly developed nose that contains over 100,000 muscles. It is used for breathing, smelling, drinking, trumpeting and grabbing. An elephant's ivory tusks are used for digging and scraping bark; males may use them for fighting.
