Elk tracks show a cloven hoof consisting of two bean-shaped sides that are wider at the back and come to a point in the front. They range from 3 to 4 1/2 inches long and are 2 1/2 to almost 4 inches wide.
Elk tracks have a stride length of 26 to 28 inches and a trail width (the measurement from the outside of one foot to the outside of the opposite foot) of 8 inches. Their tracks are similar to deer tracks, but they are larger and longer. Other signs of elk include their offal or scat, wallows in the ground and marks made when the elk rub against trees.
