The emblem symbolizes the Marine Corps commitment to protecting the United States in the air, on land and at sea. On the emblem, there is a ribbon in the eagle's beak with the Latin motto "Sempler Fidelis," which means "Always Faithful." President Dwight D. Eisenhower made the EGA the official emblem for the Marine Corps in 1955, but the Marines began using the emblem for uniforms in 1868.
