What are embryonic stem cells?

Embryonic stem cells are stem cells that have been derived from human embryos. They are pluripotent, which means that they are able to grow into many different cellular forms.
Embryonic stem cells are derived from the inner mass of human embryos and are able to differentiate into all of the three germ layers: ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm. These germ layers can all be created by the embryonic stem cells, and they can develop into a variety of organs, tissues and cell types. In general, embryonic stem cells can develop into more than 200 different cell types of the adult body once they are genetically prompted to do so.
