End-stage Alzheimer's disease, also called late-stage Alzheimer's, is the disease's final stage and is marked by severe impairment, according to the Alzheimer's Association. People who are afflicted with end-stage Alzheimer's disease generally need around-the-clock care.
In end-stage Alzheimer's disease, the sufferer loses awareness of recent occurrences and his surroundings, notes the Alzheimer's Association. Full-time assistance with daily living needs is required, including high levels of help with the individual's personal care needs. The person may have a heightened difficulty communicating with others and become prone to infections, including pneumonia. Physical abilities decline, including the ability to sit, walk and swallow.
