Why is engineering called the "stealth profession"?

Engineering is considered to be an invisible or stealth profession due to the fact that often times most people do not think of engineers when they associate people with the heavy oil industries, office buildings or highway constructions. Various types of professional engineers are an integral part in construction.

Many important, modern-day constructions and technological breakthroughs result from professional engineers' efforts.
