What is an enhanced driver's license?

An enhanced driver's license is one that provides proof of identity and U.S. citizenship by having a radio frequency identification chip or barcode. The EDL makes it easier to cross the border into the U.S. from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean.
The RFID chip or barcode brings up the traveler's biographic and biometric data when going through the border inspection booth. The EDL does not store personally identifiable information, only a number that links to information in the Department of Homeland Security's database.
Canada offers EDLs as alternatives to Canadian passports. As of 2014, the provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec all offer EDLs to those that want them.
