ENIAC, which stands for Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer, was the first programmable electronic general-purpose computer. ENIAC's engineers announced the creation of the machine in February 1946.
Under the direction of Herman Goldstine, a group of scientists and engineers began to create ENIAC in 1943 as a tool for artillery units to calculate shell trajectories. Though World War II had ended before ENIAC was complete, the military found a use for it in the development of the hydrogen bomb, and it was also deployed in weather studies and wind-tunnel design. ENIAC was a massive machine, occupying an entire 50-by-30-foot basement. The military retired the machine in 1955.
