Sir Isaac Newton was born on Jan. 4, 1643. He was the son of Isaac Newton and Hannah Ayscough Newton, though his father died shortly before he was born.
Newton was raised by his grandmother until he was 12, as his mother remarried and left him behind. When his stepfather died, she returned with his stepbrothers with the intent of turning Newton into a farmer like his father, a venture that failed miserably. Eventually, he entered the University of Cambridge. He did not do well there at first, because he was required to study the general requirements while his main interest was in the sciences; however, he did eventually graduate.
