Vitrectomy gas varies from silicone oil mainly in the fact that it is a gas instead of a liquid. Using silicone oil has its benefits in that it offers quicker recovery time from the initial procedure and there are no restrictions on flying, explains NJ Retina.
When using vitrectomy gas during an operation, flying restrictions are in place because of the way the gas expands under the reducing atmospheric pressure present at high elevations, notes NJ Retina. The downside of using silicone oil is that the oil requires surgical removal in a follow-up operation, whereas the gas absorbs into the body from a week to up to two months.
