Present-day Ephesus, known as Efes in Turkey, is located near the town of Selcuk, about one hour’s drive south of Izmir. The ruins of the biblical city lie on the western edge of modern-day Turkey.

Ancient Ephesus was home to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The city had a harbor and was one of the world’s greatest seaports and a center of travel and commerce. Over the centuries, sediment from the Cayster River has filled in the harbor, and, in 2014, the city is about five miles inland from the Aegean coast.

The ruins of Ephesus attract many tourists, especially Christians, because of the city’s association with St. Paul, writer of “Ephesians” and many more books of the New Testament.
