The large island of Sumatra is situated along the western border of Indonesia, which is part of Southeast Asia. The Malacca Strait separates Sumatra from Malaysia and Singapore to the east, and the Indian Ocean forms the Sumatran western coastline.

The equator bisects Sumatra, which is about 1,110 miles long with a population of more than 50 million people. Most people enter Sumatra through Medan, on the northeast side of the island. The sixth-largest island in the world, Sumatra belongs to Indonesia.

Kualanamu International Airport connects flights to Southeast Asia and other locations in Indonesia. No direct flights exist between Sumatra and the United States as of 2015.
