The most important materials needed to paint a ceiling are drop cloths, a stepladder, a screwdiver, safety goggles and an old hat. The other materials needed are necessary for any painting project: a paint tray, a roller cage and cover, an extension handle, painter's tape and rags.

When painting a ceiling, moving all furniture either out of the room or to the center of the room makes the job easier. Cover the furniture that remains with a drop cloth. Use a screwdriver to remove screws for any cover plates around light fixtures. Tape around fixtures that cannot be removed from the ceiling. Work in small sections, taking time to go slowly and carefully where the ceiling meets the wall.
