Why was the "Eragon" sequel cancelled?

Extremely poor reviews of the first "Eragon" movie led to any potential sequels being canceled. The movie did earn a lot of money at the box office, though this did not sway the decision of the studios.

Released in 2006, "Eragon" was based on the first book in a series of young adult novels by Christopher Paolini. The reception of the general audience and fans of the "Eragon" book series was positive to the first film, and it earned almost $250 million worldwide. Movie critic reviews, however, were much less positive. The well-known movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes rated the movie at only 16 percent.
